Norfolk ‘Blitz Chess’ Tournament at The Morley Club Sunday 19th June 2022

This is the full press release for the event, a shortened version appeared in local media…

Thirty East-Anglian chess players have competed in a ‘Blitz Chess’ Tournament at The Morley Club in Sheringham.
The players were given just 5 minutes plus an additional 2 seconds per move to complete all their moves in each of their ten games. Participants required high levels of physical and mental stamina as well as chess prowess.
The tournament was aimed at celebrating the centenary of The Morley Club (founded in 1920) and its long-standing association with North Norfolk Chess Club. The event was organised by Norfolk County Chess Association (NCCA) in conjunction with North Norfolk Chess Club. The Morley Club generously sponsored the event and prizes.
Ieysaa Bib-Suhayl (Broadland Chess Club) won the Championship section (and the Greg Tebble Cup) after an exciting play-off game against Martin Walker (Norwich Dons Chess Club).
The Challengers section was won by David May (St John’s Chess Club, Norwich).
Robin Blackwell, Alex Evans, and Jack Evans were the top scoring North Norfolk Chess Club players.
Other local successes included Edward King (St Johns) who was runner-up in the Challengers section, Daniel Gomez (Norfolk & Norwich) who won the U1900 Rating Prize and Ruta Kriksciuniene (North Norfolk) who won the U1500 Rating Prize.
John Wickham (NCCA Chair and the event’s organiser / arbiter) commented:
“This tournament was one of a series of local chess events. Some players prefer playing traditional ‘long games’ – which can last 3 hours or longer. Others, particularly the younger players, enjoy the frenetic pace of ‘Blitz Chess’. Hopefully, everyone interested in playing chess can find a format which appeals through their local club.”
Tony Larner (NNCC member) commented
“We are very pleased how the event went and are particularly grateful for the support provided by The Morley Club today and for our regular Friday evening club nights.”
